THE BEEKMAN HOTEL

The earliest surviving NYC "fireproof" office building, Temple Court was adapted to house a 287-key destination hotel which includes the contiguous floors of GKV's clever 51-story addition to the South. Together known as The Beekman Hotel, amenities include a cavernous cellar and a lofty second floor event space, a gym, a nightclub, a bar and two fine restaurants. The landmark's distinctive fully-restored facade consists of a rusticated stone base below red brick with Queen Anne style terra cotta details capped by two prominent towers and dates from 1881. A limestone addition with Romanesque detailing was built in 1889. New storefronts along three street frontages are inspired by those from two different eras of a building's long history. New mahogany windows in multiple designs and a granite-columned portico long-removed from the building lobby's entryway were designed based on historic photos. The original office spaces surrounding the magical 9-story skylit atrium, were transformed to guest rooms. The atrium, rich with Victorian style detail, was carefully restored, including cast iron balconies and balustrades with mahogany top rails, encaustic tile floors and the grand skylight. Ornate wood-framed windows, paneled doors and plaster archivolts were replicated using the original rhythms from another time. New fixtures and finishes of rich materials were selected to align with the distinctive character of the original design.
