Michael Fontaine, AIA
Principal
Michael was named a Principal of Gerner Kronick + Valcarcel, Architects, DPC in 2014. Michael has over 30 years of experience designing and managing commercial, residential, institutional and historical projects. Prior to joining GKV Architects, Michael was a Senior Designer at Kohn Pederson Fox Architects and was responsible for design packages for four award winning high-rise projects, most notably the United States Federal Courthouse in Minneapolis. During his tenure with GKV, he has headed many diverse and successful design teams, including the design of ZUMA New York, an internationally acclaimed Japanese restaurant in New York City; TEN23, an award-winning residential building adjacent to the High Line Park in NYC; and the Garanti Bank Headquarters, a 20-story commercial tower in Istanbul, Turkey. He has recently completed the Graduate Hotel New Haven, a historic boutique hotel on the Yale University campus and a new charter high school in Brooklyn. Michael holds professional degrees in Architecture and Landscape Architecture from Carnegie-Mellon University and Harvard University. He is an active member of the NYBC Architects Leadership Council, has served on architectural juries and has lectured for the American Institute of Architects. His design work has been published in numerous publications, including: Architecture, Architectural Record, Architectural Digest, A+U Architecture, Interior Design, Studio Works 3 and The New York Times. Michael has been a top fund-raiser for the MS Society and a volunteer coach for youth sports. He divides his spare time with dual passions for the built world and the great outdoors.
