THE BEEKMAN HOTEL
The Beekman is a historic restoration and adaptive reuse project located on 5 Beekman Street, New York, NY. GKV Architects was commissioned to adapt a historic landmark commercial structure into a hotel and to construct a 51-story, 68-unit modern condominium tower on an adjacent lot. The first 10 floors of the tower are joined to the hotel, and hold much of the hotel’s state of the art heating and ventilating and fire suppression infrastructure. The upper floors of the tower are designed as residential condominiums. Built in 1883 the historic Temple Court Building was the first “Fireproof” building in New York and is an early example of the use of brick and terra cotta in an office building. A key element of the hotel design was GKV Architects’ attention to the preservation and restoration of the historic and magnificent central atrium and grand skylight with its historic cast iron balustrades, and period wood arched doors and windows.
